Oss: Hi Gerry, what are you going to talk about at Intralife?
Gerry: I’m going to focus on exploring the sexual habits of wild Irish salmon. And then perhaps give a dissertation on why James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake is perfect night time reading for children. If we have time over I’ll do a bit on how the number one objective of your intranet should be to improve productivity. A great intranet—as someone once told me—is a “survivor’s guide to a shitty week.” A great intranet is about employee tasks—making them faster, easier to complete.
A great intranet is NOT an IT solution. Putting IT in charge of the intranet is like giving Santa a credit card. Lots and lots of cool toys get bought, but are they really what we need? A great intranet is NOT a communication megaphone. Giving an intranet to a communicator is like giving a pub to an alcoholic.
We need both IT and Communications! And we need HR and all the other major parts of the organization to work together. It’s impossible to have a successful intranet without a strong governance board representing all the key stakeholders in the organization. Successful intranet management is by definition collaborative.
And the key metric? Time. It’s all about time. The number of complaint, the number one reason why staff all over the world say they don’t like / or don’t want to use the intranet is: “It’s a waste of time.” Intranets should save time, not waste it. This is the sort of stuff I’ll be talking about.
Oss: Why should we not miss out on your talk?
Gerry: Because I’ll be handing out Irish chocolates and glasses of whiskey. A lot of what I do is about helping web professionals do a better job and build a better career for themselves. So, if you’re interested in advancing your career there will hopefully be some interesting stuff for you. I’ll be talking about how organizations such as Tetra Pak, HSBC and Microsoft are using these task management methods for their intranets, and seeing real results that are getting the attention of and respect from senior management.
Oss: What fascinates you at the moment?
Gerry: Music. But then that always has. And for some reason I’m fascinated right now by the Second World War and am reading humongous long books like The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. Another fascinating thing is the role of finding people within a modern organization. It becomes more complicated and even more essential. More complicated because a lot of the people you need to find to do your job don’t even work for the organization. They’re contractors, independent consultants, etc. And it’s more essential because the modern organization is highly fluid and cross-functional and collaborative. So, the people you need are not ‘sitting’ close by. You need to reach out to them. So, finding people is a very interesting challenge.
Oss: Thanks Gerry! Were looking forward to having you over in May.
